Prostate Cancer Screening
Roger Williams Medical Center will host its annual free prostate cancer screening on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This prostate cancer screening is for men over 50 (over 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer) who have not been diagnosed and are not currently under the care of an urologist.
Men who will be screened should enter through the Diagnostic Wing entrance of Roger Williams Medical Center, which is located at 825 Chalkstone Avenue in Providence. Free parking is available.
One in six men will get Prostate Cancer in their lifetime. Screening is a great way to detect cancer early while it is easiest to treat. To reserve your appointment time, please call (401) 456-2230 and press “1” to speak with the physician finder coordinator.

Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening
Roger Williams Medical Center is hosting a screening for Peripheral Arterial Disease on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This screening, which takes place in Kay Auditorium on the Roger Williams’ campus, is free and open to the public. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) affects 1 in 20 Americans over the age of 50 and can raise their risk for heart attack and stroke. PAD develops when leg arteries become clogged with plaque-fatty deposits that limit blood flow to the legs. It is caused by the same risk factors that lead to heart disease. Just like clogged arteries in the heart, clogged arteries in the legs raise the risk for heart attack and stroke. Some people with PAD have leg muscle pain when walking. Many have no symptoms at all.
To see if you are a candidate for a PAD screening, please call 456-2230 to answer a short series of questions.
If you have any of the following risk factors, you should consider getting screened for PAD:
- Diabetes
- Smoker
- High blood pressure
- Physical inactivity
- Overweight
There are a limited number of slots open for this screening. If you or anyone you know carries any of these risk factors, please call 456-2230 to see if you are a candidate for screening.

Walk From Obesity
Did you know that Rhode Island was among the top 12 fundraising states in the 2010 Walk From Obesity? The Walk from Obesity is a nationwide event designed to raise awareness of obesity. Funds raised from the event support the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Foundation and its research and professional education initiatives and also support the general public educational and advocacy programs of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC). Last month, Roger Williams Medical Center, Rhode Island Surgeons, and the Living Life support group were recognized for their leadership in the 2010 walk, the first-ever in the state. Roger Williams is again the lead sponsor of this year's walk, which happens on October 8 at Slater Park in Pawtucket.
