Mission Statement
Purpose and Target Audience
The purpose of the Continuing Medical Education Program at the Roger Williams Medical Center is to present current medical information and teach new skills to the medical staff in order to help improve patient care and enhance the health of the community. The Continuing Medical Education Committee's responsibilities include: 1) identification of professional practice gaps and educational needs 2) coordination and initiation of continuing medical education efforts within the medical center; 3) approval of category I credit for departmental and staff educational activities; 4) documentation of continuing medical education participation of the staff members; 5) development of mechanisms for the dissemination of educational information to members of the medical staff; 6) coordination of educational efforts with peer review, utilization review, medical care evaluation and tissue review; 7) incorporation of the needs of the staff into educational programs and 8) evaluation of the effectiveness of these activities. It is expected that the Continuing Medical Education activities will result in increased provider knowledge, competency, performance or potentially improved outcomes in caring for patients.
Content Areas and types of Activities
Continuing Medical Education sponsored activities include weekly and monthly departmental teaching conferences, medical and surgical grand rounds, subspecialty conferences, clinicopathologic conferences and special seminars and symposia. These activities are planned and organized by various members of the medical center staff based on the relevance of the topic to gaps identified in practice, and or educational needs of the Roger Williams Medical Center medical staff and the timeliness and importance of the topic to the medical community. The speakers and discussants include both Roger Williams Medical Center staff and invited guests.
Expected Results
It is expected that the content presented will be objective, ethical and balanced. CME sessions that receive commercial support are so acknowledged in all announcements and at the beginning of the CME program. The Department of Continuing Medical Education, in collaboration with the Roger Williams Medical Center, will also serve to maintain a medical library providing access to both print and computer-based resources to support effective information use and study.
It is expected that the Continuing Medical Education activities will result in increased provider knowledge, competency, performance and potentially improved outcomes in caring for patients.
Assessment of Results
Roger Williams Medical Center is committed to assessing the impact and effectiveness of its CME Program through qualitative and quantitative methods.

The Roger Williams Medical Center is accredited by the Rhode Island Medical Society (RIMS) to sponsor intrastate continuing medical education for physicians. *The Roger Williams Medical Center designates these educational activities for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) (TM) . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Activities listed in this calendar are subject to changes or cancellations. |
