Objectives: At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

  • Review the typical features, risk factors, and clinical course of Clostridium difficile infection.
  • Recognize C. difficile is increasing in frequency, with increased associated morbidity and mortality.
  • Understand that both host factors and microbial factors may play a role in recent changes in C. difficile frequency and severity.
  • Understand the state of our knowledge concerning C. difficile treatment and appreciate the types of new agents that are being developed for treatment.
