About Us
Mission:
The mission of Dermatology at Roger Williams Medical Center is to provide outstanding care to patients suffering from skin diseases and conditions. This is achieved by total involvement of the Department in the steps required to improve detection, diagnosis, care, and understanding of the causes of skin disease.
Overview:
Dermatology is the branch of medicine devoted to the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of skin diseases and skin cancer in children and adults. Dermatologists go through a very long and thorough training that requires graduation from medical school, internship and/or full residency in internal medicine, surgery, or pediatrics, and three additional years devoted to training in the medical and surgical aspects of Dermatology. In addition to life threatening skin cancer, skin lymphoma and pre-lymphoma, debilitating blistering diseases, many serious infectious conditions, Dermatologists diagnose and treat a variety of acute and chronic problems involving the skin, mouth, external genitals, hair, and nails. Because the skin often provides clues to life-threatening internal conditions, Dermatologists also play a lead role in the diagnosis of internal malignancies, rheumatic diseases, bone marrow transplantation-related complications, and internal infections. In addition, the specialty of Dermatology improves the quality of life of our patients by dedication to improving disfiguring conditions caused by aging, birthmarks, scars, as well as hair loss and excessive hair.
