Chocolate
Fantasy Ball
A
sweet time was had by all at the highly-successful Chocolate Fantasy
Ball on Saturday, February 9, 2002 at the Fleet Center. The event,
which raised money for new operating rooms at Roger Williams Medical
Center, drew more than 450 people. They were there for a great cause
and had a great time! There were terrific auctions, scrumptious food
catered by Guy Abelson, and swinging music by the Night Life Orchestra.
Among the special auction items was a football autographed by the
Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. It was even specially-delivered
to winner Dr. Stephen Migliori by Patriots' fullback Marc Edwards!
Thanks to everyone who made the night such a success and gave our
operating room fundraising efforts such a boost.

Doctor Kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month
There
are a great number of women who have stories about surviving breast
cancer, but few are more dramatic than Dr. Jerri Nielsen's. While
working as the doctor for a crew stationed at the South Pole, Dr.
Nielsen discovered a lump in her breast. The stark conditions on
the Pole made it impossible for a plane to land and rescue Dr. Nielsen
so she started her own treatment, including chemotherapy. After
a number of months, planes were able to land and bring Dr. Nielsen
to a hospital for further treatment. Dr. Nielsen recounted her ordeal
in her best-selling book "Icebound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle
for Survival at the South Pole".
Dr.
Nielsen was at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston on October 1st
to help raise awareness about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and
the Roger Williams Medical Center Breast Health Program. She signed
copies of her book and gave a humorous and touching speech about
the new perspective she has gained since surviving breast cancer.
The 250 people who attended the event can attest to the power of
her positive message.
