Compared to just five years ago, hospitals today receive substantially fewer dollars from Medicare, Medicaid, private health insurance and managed care organizations for the services they provide. Yet hospitals in this country -- Roger Williams Medical Center included -- provide some of the highest quality medical care found anywhere in the world. How are we able to continue this level of excellence, despite reduced funding?

The answer lies in the many thoughtful, generous individuals who support us through charitable giving. Without them, much of the care we provide would not be possible. Gifts to Roger Williams Medical Center can take many forms. All are put to significant use to make a real difference in people's lives. For information, call the Development Office at 401-456-2576.

The Annual Fund
Every year, neighbors, friends, former patients, and members of the business community contribute to our Annual Fund campaign. Their gifts are combined and put to general use to purchase needed equipment, renovate hospital facilities, provide critical care and continued research underway at the Cancer Center, and reach out into the community with free lifesaving screenings.

The Henry Allen Whitmarsh Society
The Henry Allen Whitmarsh Society is designed to accept and recognize charitable donations at several significant levels. Our annual memberships range from $1,000 to just under $10,000; our Lifetime membership recognizes those who have made an outright or accumulated gift of $10,000 or more and have established an endowed gift. Members of The Henry Allen Whitmarsh Society become part of the hospital's extended family through invitations to and participation in special public and private events and planning committees.

Matching Gifts
Several companies in our area actively support the work we're doing at Roger Williams Medical Center by matching or increasing their employees' gifts to us. So a donation of $100 could amount to a gift of $200 or more. To learn if your company matches charitable contributions made to us, click on Matching Gifts or ask your Personnel or Public Relations Office for information.

Special Gifts & Memorials
The Special Gifts Program is one of the most thoughtful ways to show how much you care for a loved one or how much you appreciate the medical care extended to your family member or friend. Special gifts and memorials are often made:

In memory of a loved one

In honor of a special birthday or anniversary, or

In recognition of care received

When you make a Special Gift of any amount, we send a personal note to the person, family or department you are honoring to let them know about your kind gesture.

Special Gift Funds
Often times, in memory of a loved one, a family member or friend will establish a special fund in honor of the person. Memorial Funds may be established with a gift of $5,000 and may be designated to support a specific purpose. Gifts of $10,000 or more can create a Memorial Endowment Fund in the loved one's name. If you are interested in this form of giving, an individual from our Development office will work directly with you to ensure that your intentions are honored and met.

Hospitals in Rhode Island have always operated close to the bone, with operating margins among the slimmest in the country. But the years following the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 have been particularly challenging for hospitals. Additionally, more than $100 million in free and uncompensated hospital care was provided to Rhode Islanders last year, with Roger Williams Medical Center providing nearly $6 million of care to those who could not afford it.
