Dr. Michael Bonitati and Dr. R. James Koness honored by Roger Williams’ medical staff

Dr. Michael Bonitati and Dr. R. James Koness have been recognized with the Distinguished Service Award by the medical staff of Roger Williams Medical Center. The award is given to physicians who have lengthy service to the hospital and have made significant contributions to medical programs and patient care. The awards were presented by Dr. Cynthia Alves, president of the medical staff, and Dr. N. Joseph Espat, Chairman of Surgery, at the medical staff meeting on December 16.

Dr. Bonitati has been chairman of the Emergency Department at Roger Williams since 2003. He completed medical school at Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico and completed the Fifth Pathway Program at Brown University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and internship at Roger Williams. Dr. Bonitati has served on numerous hospital committees and has served as president of the Medical Staff, Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee, and a member of the Board of Trustees. He has been voted “Top Doc” in Emergency Medicine on several occasions in Rhode Island Monthly magazine.

R. James Koness, MD, is Director of the Breast Health Program at Roger Williams Medical Center. A general surgeon and surgical oncologist, Dr. Koness is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Brown University School of Medicine. He was fellowship-trained in Surgical Oncology at Roger Williams Medical Center/Brown University. Dr. Koness completed a residency in General Surgery at Brown University and graduated from SUNY-Buffalo School of Medicine New York. He is a Diplomat in both the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Surgery.
