Transfusion service accredited by AABB; Dr. Sweeney senior author on article in “Transfusion”
The Roger Williams Medical Center Blood Bank has been reaccredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) for a two year period to 2016. Roger Williams’ participation in the AABB accreditation program represents a strong commitment to quality outcomes and patient safety. The assessors specifically commented that the staff was open, that all procedures, policies and processes were well organized, and that the organization is well maintained and functions very well. The AABB inspection process is rigorous and is based on quality and operational systems assessment designed to encourage innovation in quality improvement.
Dr. Joseph Sweeney, medical director of the Blood Bank, was senior author on an article entitled “Residual plasma in red blood cells and transfusion-related acute lung injury” that was published in the October issue of “Transfusion”, which is the official journal of the AABB. The lead author on the article was Dr. Litchia L. Weber, a former medical resident at Roger Williams, who completed a Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital a year ago.
