HIV/AIDS Research
Dr. Gail Skowron directs the HIV Immunology Laboratory and the HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Program. The NIH-supported HIV Immunology Laboratory investigatesimmunopathogenesis and HIV-specific immune responses. Currently the laboratory is investigating the NK mediated killing of CD4 cells in lymphoid tissues and the function of subsets of natural killer (NK-T) cells. Dr. Skowron is also a member of the NIH-funded Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group, leading a study to evaluate the contribution of viral replication capacity and tropism in determining the CD4 response to antiretroviral therapy. Clinical trials in HIV therapy include the evaluation of new therapies for peripheral neuropathy, oral candidiasis and antiretroviral therapy.

General Infectious Disease Research
Dr. Yoram Puius directs inpatient and outpatient protocols of antibiotics and antifungals. Previous protocols have evaluated posaconazole and micafungin. Ongoing Quality Assurance projects are evaluating compliance with national preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines and novel approaches for the treatment of drug-resistant pathogens.
