Emergency/Ambulatory
Medicine
During the categorical training experience at Roger Williams Medical
Center, residents will have the opportunity to rotate in an intense,
off-site, Emergency Care facility and be exposed to an even greater
variety of medical problems that one might not see in an inpatient
setting. As a major teaching affiliate of Boston University School
of Medicine, house staff may coordinate elective time in Boston at
all of the Boston University affiliated hospitals and clinics, however
the core rotations are done exclusively at Roger Williams Medical
Center.
Private
Practice Experience
The Resident's Practice simulates a private practice experience
for the house officer. It is supervised by a faculty of academic
General Internists, housed in an on-site facility which is adequately
staffed and supplied. Patients are seen one afternoon each week
by the resident and followed longitudinally by the resident throughout
the three-year training program. Residents share night and weekend
coverage of the practice. When patients require admission, the resident
is "consulted" to assist in management. Lectures on outpatient
medical topics are given by the faculty at each clinic session.
Community-based
Experience
Residents have the opportunity during their second and third years
to participate in "second site" electives where they work
closely with an Internal Medicine attending at a private office.
Patients will be seen one afternoon per week and followed longitudinally
throughout the training program. Residents thus gain exposure to
both private proactive and office management.
