Dedicated and Accessible Faculty Make the Difference

Contact with accessible clinical faculty has been rated as the single most valuable experience during the residency training. As a result, we keep our resident:faculty ratio to 2:1.

There are approximately 35 full-time faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine. Their offices and laboratories are located in the same three story building as the patient care areas, the housestaff libraries and lounges. At RWMC, the full-time faculty and housestaff interact directly and frequently during the day. No one is "off campus" or "at the university laboratory."

The full-time faculty is augmented by a large, private practice faculty of over 60 internists, most of whom are graduates of academic training programs in the Northeast, and all of whom have offices within twenty miles of the hospital. These general internal medicine specialists serve as primary care role models for the training program. They serve as teaching attendings and service attendings. Housestaff are encouraged to maintain a longitudinal practice with one of these office-based physicians in addition to the hospital-based "Residents' Practice."
