Weight Loss Surgery Testimonial - K.M.
October 4th, 2010
Hi! My name is Kerrie...I am 24 years old, and I had Gastric Bypass on November 17, 2009 by Dr. Pohl. At my highest weight I weighed 350lbs. As of today, October 4, 2010, I have lost a total of 145lbs. I had Sleep Apnea, needing a CPAP machine at night, High Blood Pressure, as well as High Cholesterol and my feet, legs and back hurt all the time. I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without being out of breath. I couldn't go to an Amusement Park because I was too large to fit in the rides. I couldn't go shopping with my friends because it would hurt me to not be able to try on clothes with them...I had to always go to Lane Bryant or Torrid. Being 23 years old and not being able to do a fun thing as going shopping with friends was sad.
But today... I have gone from a size 26/28 pant to a size 16, a 3x shirt to a L/XL, and no longer need my CPAP machine, no longer need my High Blood Pressure Pill and no longer have aches and pains all over my body. I can now shop at "normal" stores! I don't need Plus Size stores. Now I can shop at places I never could.
The first time I ever heard of Gastric Bypass, I was about 12 or 13 years old and I was watching Oprah with my Mom. Her show that day was on people who had WLS. I said to my Mom that day that if I could not lose weight, I would have that surgery. And of course she said "No, you won't! You will lose the weight by yourself" Well...I never did.
By the time I was 10 years old, I was just over 200lbs. I started researching Gastric Bypass when I was 16 years old. Every day for almost 3 years I would look up Success Stories, horror stories, meal plans, complications, anything I could find on the surgery.
I had first seen Dr. Pohl back in 2005 when I was 19 years old. I had completed most of my pre-op's but did not continue hoping that I wouldn't have to turn to Gastric Bypass. Finally, almost 4 years AFTER I had first seen him, I had GAINED about 35-40lbs and had health problems due to my weight at 23 years old. Finally, in January of 2009, I continued the process to have WLS. Some people in my life did not agree with me having the surgery. They told me I could do it on my own, or it was "an easy way out" But if you are Morbidly Obese and have researched WLS, you know it is NOT an easy way out. Having Gastric Bypass has saved my life. Dr. Pohl has saved my life and given me a life that I never knew was possible. It hasn't been an easy road but I would have never taken another road in my life. If I had to do it all over again, I would.
I have had no complications... But as we know, not everyone is as fortunate as I have been. However, knowing the risks that were involved, I knew they were risks I was willing to take. I still have a way to go but I WILL get there! I am 30 lbs away from my goal weight and have already accomplished so much more in these last 11 months than I have in my whole lifetime. If I were to never lose another pound, I am happy with what I HAVE achieved!
Thank you to Dr. Pohl and his team for everything you have done. And good luck to everyone who is thinking about WLS.
