[volunteer photo]Throughout history, hospitals have relied heavily on the dedication and hard work of volunteers to strengthen and enhance the organization's ability to provide care and services to the community. Now more than ever, hospitals need volunteer support. If you have knowledge, time and energy to give, please call our Volunteer office at 401-456-2505 for information about the many opportunities we provide.

Youth volunteers bring cheer to Elmhurst residents

Almost every day at Elmhurst Extended Care, you'll find young men and women spending time with our residents, spreading cheer that spans the generations. Most of these student volunteers are at least 50 years younger than the Elmhurst residents.

The age difference doesn't matter.

"The time we spend here is enjoyable," says LaSalle Academy senior Andrew Graziano. "You can see the smile on residents' faces when we visit. A lot of them say we remind them of their children or their grandchildren."

On this particular visit, Andrew and fellow student Nazario Gutteriez are working the motor skills of Elmhurst residents, playing catch with soft frisbees and beach balls. As part of the community service of their Christian Service class, Andrew and Nazario visit Elmhurst for an hour every Wednesday.

"The residents and staff are great here," said Andrew. "It's rewarding to see that we can help out."

One regular student visitor to Elmhurst is Providence College star basketball player John Linehan. John, a health policy major, has been working as an intern at Elmhurst for the past few months. The program is working. Residents get social interaction that makes them feel years younger. For students, there is the reward of knowing they made a difference. Besides PC and LaSalle, other schools that participate in this program are Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Bryant College, Community College of Rhode Island, and St. Pius Elementary School.

"Celebrate the American Spirit - Volunteer!" is the theme for the 30th annual National Volunteer Week, April 27 - May 3, 2003. The purpose of the week is to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at the local, state and national levels. National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteers.
